In Ukraine, the Nordic labelling system for separate waste collection has been introduced as part of amendments to the Methodology for the Separate Collection of Household Waste. The updated rules, developed by the Ministry of Community and Territorial Development with support from the Swedish-Ukrainian Waste Management for Ukraine (WM4U) Programme, aim to make waste sorting more consistent and easier to understand across the country.
Previously, Ukrainian communities used different approaches to waste sorting, including different container colours and labelling systems. The introduction of the symbols is part of broader waste management reforms supported by WM4U. The Programme works with national and local authorities to strengthen waste management governance, develop sustainable municipal waste systems and support Ukraine’s alignment with EU requirements.
About the Ministry of Community and Territorial Development
The Ministry for Recovery, Infrastructure and Transport of Ukraine is the central executive body responsible for shaping state policy in transport, infrastructure development, housing and communal services, reconstruction and regional development.
The Ministry plays a key role in supporting regional development and local self-government, as well as coordinating reconstruction efforts across Ukraine. Its priorities include restoring critical infrastructure, improving energy efficiency and strengthening energy security in communities. The Ministry also supports the continued development of decentralisation and spatial planning.
About WM4U
The Strengthening of Municipal Waste Management in Ukraine Programme (2024–2027) is funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and implemented by the Swedish Association of Waste Management and Recycling (Avfall Sverige) and the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SALAR). WM4U supports Ukraine in developing modern, sustainable and inclusive municipal waste management systems in line with EU standards. The Programme works at national, regional and local levels, supporting better planning, financing and coordination, strengthening the capacity of communities and regions, and promoting cooperation and knowledge exchange.
